    Traditional Espresso Machines FAQs

What drinks can you make with a traditional espresso machine?

The sky’s the limit when it comes to the variety of drinks you can create using a traditional espresso machine. An espresso coffee machine works by forcing water through freshly ground coffee beans under pressure to create espresso. The espresso is then used to create other drinks by adding milk foam (created using the steam wand) or by adding hot water from the built-in boiling water dispenser. Below are just a few of the drinks you can create:
    • Espresso: A short strong shot of espresso served solo.
    • Ristretto: A very short, extra strong shot of concentrated espresso.
    • Cappuccino: A shot of espresso combined with silky smooth milk foam.
    • Latte: A shot of espresso with steamed milk and a touch of foam.
    • Americano: A shot of strong espresso diluted with hot water.
    • Macchiato: A shot of espresso coffee topped with a little milk foam.
    • Flat white: A double shot of espresso topped with lightly steamed milk.

What is the best espresso machine for commercial use?

The best espresso machine for your business really depends on the requirements of your team and customers, as well as the space and facilities available at your premises. Traditional espresso machines come in a variety of sizes, from compact models with a single group head for preparing one drink at a time, to larger machines that can be operated by several members of staff at a time, preparing 2 or even 3 drinks at once.

What should I look for when buying a professional espresso machine?

There are many technical factors to take into consideration when purchasing a professional espresso machine for your business, the most important of which are the level of automation and the boiler type. From fully automated machines that grind, dose, tamp, brew, and steam your coffee from start to finish, to more basic machines that simply control the amount of dispensed water per espresso, traditional coffee machines really vary in terms of the expertise required to operate them successfully. Heavily automated machines are not only less labour intensive but are also more consistent in terms of the finished product, as there is little room for human error. Professional espresso machines are available with two different boiler sets ups. Heat exchange machines, which use a single boiler to produce steam and heating water to brew coffee, and a dual or multi boiler, which has different boilers for different uses. For high volume environments we recommend a dual or multi boiler, as heat exchange machines can lose temperature and pressure quickly. There are also lots of additional extras you may want for your new espresso machine, such as heated cup storage and even an integrated grinder.

How long will an espresso machine last?

Professional espresso machines have a much longer lifespan than other types of commercial coffee machines. Traditional espresso machines can last for up to a decade when they are cleaned, descaled and serviced regularly.  At Liquidline you can lease a barista coffee machine for either 3 or 5 years, at the end of which you can upgrade your machine to the latest model.

How much does a professional espresso machine cost?

The cost of a traditional espresso machine really depends on the features and specification of the machine - the number of boilers, group heads, level of automation etc. At Liquidline you can lease a barista espresso machine from €22.25 per week. How do you clean an espresso machine?

Cleaning your traditional espresso machine daily is essential to brewing great tasting coffee. At the end of each day we recommend wiping down the whole machine with a food-safe cleaning solution and cleaning the following elements thoroughly.
    • Group heads: Go over the group heads with a cleaning brush to get rid of any used coffee particles. Add espresso machine cleaner to the portafilters then reattach to the group heads. Run 3 or 4 shots of water through the machine as if you were making an espresso. Remove the portafilters and flush away the remaining cleaning solution.
    • Portafilters: Once the group heads are clean, soak the portafilters in warm water and espresso machine cleaner for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with clean water before reattaching to the group head.
    • Steam wand: This should be cleaned after every use, but if any milk has been burnt on them simmer the wand with a very wet cloth for 10-15 minutes.
